Most aid is either:
Need-based - Awarded to a student to cover the difference between what college costs and what the family can reasonably afford to pay. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the key to this aid and determining the expected family contribution (EFC)
or
Merit-based - Awarded to a student based on academic achievement or other characteristics regardless of family financial situations
